Morning life is identical with rush and sometimes you have to prepare breakfast as quick as possible. If you want to prepare healthy and tasty breakfast for family but have that much time, sambar will save your life. Here is a quick sambar recipe with vegetables that is surely healthy and gives enough energy for whole day activity. This south Indian recipe is for 4 servings with 15 minutes of preparation time and 30 minutes of cook time.

Ingredients:

  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • 1 cup lentils
  • 1 cup arhar dal
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp imli (tamarind)
  • 1 cups okra, potatoes, beans as vegetables
  • salt

Cooking Directions:

  1. Soak the imli in warm water for about 30 minutes while you pick the dal and rinse well.
  2. Boil the dal in 2 cups water using pressure cooker until mushy, eight to nine whistles will be enough. Turn off the flame and wait until the pressure settles.
  3.  Add chopped vegetables, lentils, chili powder, turmeric powder and salt. Also add 2 cups water and stir.
  4. On medium flame, cook them for one whistle and remove the lid if the pressure settles.
  5. Add sambar powder and soaked imla. Add water if the sambar is too thick.
  6. Simmer the pressure cooker for about 10 minutes.
  7. Stir well to avoid the dal sticking at the bottom of the cooker. 
  8. Your sambar is ready to serve with rice, dosa or idli.

Cooking Tips:

  1. For even faster cooking, soak the lentils for 30 minutes before cooking.

You can add ½ tsp garam masala while adding the vegetable. Garam masala makes your sambar recipe tastier. This is also intended to give spicy flavor and more taste to the sambar.
